A school bus covers a distance from Village to school at the speed of 12 kmph and reaches the school 8 min late. The next day the school bus covers same distance at the speed of 20 kmph and reaches 10 min early. What is the distance between Village and school?

Solution(By Examveda Team)

Let actual time to reach School from Village is T.

Time taken to reach school with speed 12 kmph = T + 8/60

Distance covered = (T + 8/60) * 12

Time taken to reach school with speed 20 kmph = T - 10/60

Distance covered = (T - 10/60) * 20

In both cases distance covered is same, so

(T + 8/60) * 12 = (T - 10/60) * 20

12T + 96/60 = 20T - 200/60

20T - 12T = (96/60) + (200/60)

8T = (96 + 200)/60

8T = 4.93

T = (4.93)/8 = 0.61 hours = 0.61 * 60 = 37 minutes.

So, distance covered by bus with speed 12 kmph in (37 +8)/60 hrs = (45 *12)/60 = 9 km.

    A boat goes downstream from one port to
    another in 4 hours. It covers the same distance
    upstream in 5 hours. If the speed of stream is 2
    km/hr. the distance between the two ports?

    speed = (12*20)/(20-12)
    time = "early, late" so that we have to add = (8+10)= 18 minutes
    distance = speed * time
    d = ((12*20)/(20-12))* (18/60)
    d = 9 km

    distance = speed *time
    distance =((20*12)/(20-12))*((10+8)/60)
    distance = 9km

    Answer would be 9 kms. As per the solution given their is a mistake in last step, it must be multiplied by 12 instead of 8.
