Swami Dayananda Saraswati passes away

The Swami was admitted to the hospital 10 days back. His condition kept fluctuating all these days.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati passed away at his ashram in Rishikesh on 23rd September night. He was 85. He had been ailing for quite sometime.

Born in 1930 in Manjakudi, Natarajan, as the Swami was known in his pre-monastic days, was drawn to Indian philosophy, particularly the Advaita school, listening to Swami Chinmayananda. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, his association with Swami Chinmayananda grew closer as he began taking Vedanta lessons. In 1962, he took 'Sanyas' to become Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

He continued his association with Swami Chinmayananda for a long time and the two set up Sandipani Sadhanalaya in the then Bombay to train people in Vedanta.

His contribution there and subsequently with Arsha Vidya Gurukulam saw hundreds of people learn Vedanta, take up renunciation and spread the Vedic message.

Gmail makes blocking easier

Technology giant Google has introduced 'block' and 'unsubscribe' buttons in its Gmail services, making it easier for users to get rid of unwanted mails. The feature is being launched first on the web. It will be made available on Android in a week.

In June, Google had introduced the ‘undo’ option that allows users to cancel delivery of an email within 30 seconds of hitting the send button.

Mukesh Ambani India's richest for 9th year

Industrialist Mukesh Ambani on Wednesday was named India's richest for ninth year in a row with a net worth of $ 8.9 billion, while ecommerce giant Flipkart's founders made their debut on the country's top 100 rich list.

As per Forbes magazine's latest India rich list, Ambani was followed by Sun Pharma's Dilip Shanghvi as second richest with a net worth of $18 billion, while Wipro's Azim Premji retained his third place with $15.9 billion.

Flipkart's co-founders Sachin and Binni Bansal made their debut at 86th position with a net worth of $1.3 billion each. The combined wealth of India's 100 richest persons remained largely unchanged at $ 345 billion, as compared to $346 billion in 2014, Forbes said.

Call drops may end in three months, say cellular operators

The regulator had given 15 days time to the telecom operators for taking steps to address the call drop issue.

Admitting that fixing the problem of call drops is the responsibility of mobile service providers, Rajan Mathews, director-general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), promises a significant improvement in quality of service within three months.

In Delhi, however, call drops will continue till problems related to installation of mobile-phone towers are solved, he says.

Airtel ties up with Liquid Telecom for fibre network in Africa

Bharti Airtel on 23rd September, said it will use Liquid Telecom's fibre network to connect its mobile base stations across Africa, which will let its subscribers in the region to access better speeds on its 3G and 4G networks.

Airtel has signed an agreement with Liquid Telecom for the same. The company, however, did not share the financial details of the deal.

China Railway to conduct Delhi-Mumbai high-speed rail study

A consortium led by China's national train operator has been chosen to conduct a feasibility study for a 1,200 kilometre-long high-speed rail link between Delhi and Mumbai.

The consortium includes China Railway's unit, the Third Railway Survey and Design Group, and local Indian firms, the news agency said, without providing names.
