Shoot flies belong to the family Anthomyidae.
The Anthomyiidae are a large and diverse family of Muscoidea flies. Most look rather like small houseflies but are commonly drab grey.
Shoot fly has emerged as an important and regular pest of wheat crops since the adoption of semi-dwarf varieties. The fly is about about 3 mm in body length and dark grey.
The newly hatched maggots creep into the leaf sheaths of the tillers and cut the central growing shoots causing dead hearts. In case of severe infestation the plant assumes a bushy appearance with a large number of tillers.
