B P Kanungo takes over as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India

B P Kanungo took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Kanungo was appointed to the position of the Deputy Governor for a period of three years by the Union Government on 11 March 2017. Prior to that, he was holding the position of Executive Director of RBI.

Kanungo will look after the departments of currency management, external investments and operations, government and bank accounts, and information technology, payment and settlement systems.

He will also supervise foreign exchange department, legal department, premises department and internal debt management department.

Three other Deputy Governors of the Reserve Bank of India are S S Mundra, N S Vishwanathan and Viral V Acharya.

About B P Kanungo

B P Kanungo had joined the Reserve Bank of India in September 1982.

He has worked in several functional areas of the banks such as banking and non-banking supervision, currency management, foreign exchange management and more.

He also served as the head of regional offices of RBI at Jaipur and Kolkata. He has also served as Banking Ombudsman for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
