10 May: World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is being observed across the world on the second weekend in May. This year, WMBD is being observed on 10th May.

The day seeks to raise awareness and highlight the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.

2017 Theme: “Their Future is Our Future – A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and Peoples”.

On this day people around the world organize public events such as bird festivals, education programmes, exhibitions and bird-watching excursions to celebrate WMBD.

Background

WMBD was initiated in 2006 by the United Nation as an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

The day was founded as an effort of the United Nation’s Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds.
