The 53^rd Amendment Act of 1986 inserted a new Article 371G into the Indian Constitution.

This amendment conferred full statehood on Mizoram, which was earlier a Union Territory.

It provided special provisions for Mizoram's administration, ensuring the protection of its social, cultural, and customary practices.

Note: The amendment was a result of the Mizo Peace Accord signed in 1986, which brought an end to years of insurgency in the region.
