A force P is applied at a distance x from the end of the beam as shown in the figure. What would be the value of x so that the displacement at “A” is equal to zero? Miscellaneous mcq question image

A. 0.5L

B. 0.25L

C. 0.33L

D. 0.66L

Answer: Option C

Solution (By Examveda Team)

δ1=PL3/3EI due to point load P (downward)
δ2=ML2/2EI due to moment P(L - x) (upward)
⇒δ2=P(L−x)L2/2EI
For zero displacement at point A, δ1 = δ2
⇒PL3/3EI=P(L−x)L2/2EI
⇒ x = L/3 = 0.33 L
