A monkey climbs 4 metres of a pole in 1 minute, but slips 2 meters in next minute in how much time he will reach the top of a pole 15 metres long ? Assume that he starts from the bottom of the pole.
A. 7 min. 30 sec.
B. 7 min.
C. 13 min.
D. 12 min. 45 sec.
Solution (By Examveda Team)
Height of the pole (x) = 15 m.
Climbed distance per minute(y)= 4m
Slips (y) = 2 m in next minute.
So, in 2 minute he climbs 2 m.
We take, 2 minute = 1 unit of time.
t = 2 minutes.
You can calculate required time by this formula: ( We are calculating it for 14 m.)
Reqd. time =[(ht. of pole - slipped distance)/(climbed distance - slipped distance)]*t
= [(x-z)/(y-z)]*t;
= [(14 - 2) / (4 -2)] *2
= (12/2) *2
= 6 *2
= 12 minutes.
And the last 1 m monkey will climb in 45 second becouse one he get up did not get slipped down.
So, Total time = 12 minutes 45 seconds.
(climb-slip)*n + climb >= x
(4-2)*n + 4 >= 15
2n +4 >= 15
n >= 11/2
n >= 5.5
n *2 = 12
Sir my question is climbs 5m in one min and slips 2m in next min. If height is 28 then I'm getting answer 17.33.is it right?
In first 1 min, monkey climbs 4 metres,
In second 1 min, it slips down 2 metres.
So it climbs 2 metres every 2 mins, except the last minute. In the last minute, it would cover all 4 metres and escape.
So keeping 1 min aside for last 4 metres.
Total distance to be covered is 15m, in which we subtract the last 4 m for last climb.
So, to cover 11 m:
Time required=11/2 * 2 = 11mins
Adding that last 1 min, it takes 12 mins.
Time required=11/3 * 2 = 11mins
Adding that last 1 min, it takes 12 mins.
12m pole pe ek ant 1min me 3cm chdta hai or 2min me 2cm niche aa jata hai to uss ant ko pura pole kitne min me complete kr payeha
Lets try this questions without any formula.
Total time=0
Distance left=15 meters
---------------------------
Iteration 1:
1 minute to climb 4 meters
Total time=1 minute
Distance left=11 meters
----------------------------
Iteration 2:
-2 meters slips +4 meters climb in 2minutes
So, 2 meters =2 minutes
(2 meters)*5 =(2 minutes)*5
10 meters in 10 minutes
Total time=11 minutes
Distance left=1 meter
----------------------------
Iteration 3:
Now slips back 2 meters
So Total time=12 minutes
Distance left=3 meters
4 meters in 1 minute
so, 3 meters in 45sec
Total time 12 minutes 45 seconds
Distance left = 0
I am trying your formula but not getting the answer.my question is a monkey climbs 20m pole. In the first minute it goes up by 1m and in the next min it comes down with 1/3m.find total time to climb the pole

From where you derived the formula to calculate time?
Take 15-4=11 which can be maximum length reached by n-1 th step;
1 min = 4m and next 1 min = 2m so 2 min=2meters;
in this way 5 steps so 10m
for sixth also 10+4<15 so 14-2=12
till 6 th step= 12 min
for 7th step it is can reach in 3 steps so no slipping :
4m can reach in 1 min
3m can reach in 3/4 min=45 sec
so total 12 min 45 sec
it will be 12 min 45 sec
