After Independence of India, the old province of Punjab was divided into West Punjab (Pakistan) and East Punjab (India) due to which the control of the High Court at Lahore, over Delhi and East Punjab was discontinued. Shimla was selected as the seat of the new High Court and the East Punjab High Court of Judicature was established at Shimla on 15 August, 1947 by the Governor-General on High Court order, issued under Section 9 of the Indian Independence Act, 1947.
