Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a Gram-positive bacterium that produces insecticidal proteins as crystal inclusions during its sporulation phase of growth, known as Cry or Cyt toxins, which have been proven to be effective against important crop pests and also against mosquitoes that are vectors of human diseases.
The primary action of Cry toxins is to lyse midgut epithelial cells in the target insect by forming pores in the apical microvilli membrane of the cells.
