Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was started in 2000 - 2001 to universalise elementary education by community-ownership of the school system. It is a response to the demand for quality basic education all over the country with the funding pattern of 75 : 25 between the Centre and the State Government. The various activities under this programme include provision of additional classrooms, construction of toilets, provision of uniform and textbooks, maintenance grants, school grants, etc.
