Caste arithmetic did us in, says BJP

A day after the BJP lost the Assembly election in Bihar, the party’s Parliamentary Board held a meeting here on Monday, to assess the reasons. The meeting concluded that the Grand Alliance or the Mahagathbandhan had won because there had been almost total transfer of votes among various parties in the alliance, and that this arithmetic had overwhelmed the BJP and its alliance partners.

Bengaluru-based playwright gets threat call from right-wing group

Two days ago, city-based playwright Abhishek Majumdar was surprised to get an Internet call, one he was unlikely to forget for a while. The person at the other end, who claimed to be associated with right-wing group Hanuman Sena, objected to the staging of Mr. Majumdar’s play Dweepa at the recently concluded Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival.

AP fast-tracks forest survey to meet Centre’s deadline

The AP Forest Department is racing against time to plug the gaps in its bid  to secure denotification of 19,000 hectares of reserve forest land in Krishna and Guntur districts so that it can be used for the Amaravati capital city project. “The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has agreed in principle for diversion of 19,000 hectares of land to the capital city infrastructure projects. But it pointed out certain gaps in the laid-down procedure: identification of the exact extent of land to be afforested in lieu of the denotified reserve forest area and a digital survey of that forest land.

HC Bench to come under CISF cover from Nov. 16

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials inspected the Madras High Court Bench here on Monday and held discussions with top officials of the High Court Registry with respect to taking over from the local police the job of providing security to the campus from November 16 when the court would reopen after a weeklong Deepavali vacation.

Hopefuls look to tighten grip in 4th GOP debate

The Republican presidential aspirants will face off in their fourth television debate on Tuesday in the hope of narrowing the race that remains muddled even as several of them appear struggling to stay in control of their narratives.
Two political neophytes, neurosurgeon Ben Carson and realty baron cum reality TV star Donald Trump, lead the race and commentators attribute this to resentment among Republican supporters towards its more entrenched leadership.

Sun Yat-sen commemoration to cement China-Taiwan ties

China has decided to host a string of events next year to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sun Yat-sen — a major move to help bridge cross-strait ties with Taiwan.
The decision was taken on Sunday by the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, a day after the historic meeting between President Xi Jinping and his Taiwanese counterpart Ma Ying Jeou

BUSINESS:

Boeing, Tata Advanced Systems form JV

Aviation major Boeing and the Hyderabad-based Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) have joined hands to manufacture aerostructures, starting with those for the AH-64 Apache helicopter, in India.
Announcing their joint venture, a release from Dubai on signing of the agreement on Monday, said the partnership was for also collaborating on integrated systems development opportunities in the country.
A manufacturing centre of excellence to produce aerostructures for the Apache helicopter is to be created first. In September, India had signed contracts with Boeing for purchase of 22 Apache and 15 Chinook helicopters, in a deal to be executed over four years and valued about $3 billion.

MUHURAT TRADING

Both the stock exchanges, BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), will conduct a special Muhurat Trading session on account of Diwali on November 11. Trading would be conducted in the evening between 1745 hours and 1845 hours on the day

SPORTS:

BCCI’s missive to DDCA

The BCCI has asked the Delhi Districts Cricket Association to revert with all clearances if it wants to host the fourth and final Test match against South Africa. The DDCA has tax related issues to solve with the local government.
