Modi Express’ bus launched in UK

Indian community groups in the UK have launched a ‘Modi Express’ bus for a month-long tour around iconic landmarks here to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden visit to the country next month.
The bus, which was launched on 11th October, made its first stop at Ealing Road, Wembley also known as ‘Little India’, followed by Trafalgar Square to celebrate Diwali.

Kasuri’s book launched despite Sena protest

Unfazed by the Shiv Sena protest and blackening of the face of Sudheendra Kulkarni, the organisers went ahead with the launch of former Pakistan Foreign Minister Ahmed Kasuri’s book ‘Neither a Hawk, Nor a Dove’ at a function here.
The event was held amidst tight security for the visiting dignitary in the wake of Shiv Sena’ threat to disrupt the function despite appeals to it to give up its protest.
Mr. Kasuri himself echoed the sentiments after the morning’s event outside the house of Kulkarni, Chairman of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), the think-tank and organiser of the book launch show, had left a bad taste when Shiv Sena activists smeared black paint on his face.

Theatre artist Maya Krishna returns Sangeet Natak Akademi award

Theatre artist Maya Krishna Rao on Monday returned her Sangeet Nataak Akademi award to protest against the Dadri lynching and the “overall rising intolerance” in the country.
A founder-member of the street theatre group Theatre Union, Mr. Rao scripted, directed, and performed street plays such as Om Swaha, a critique of dowry, and Dafa No. 180, on the Indian rape law, between 1979 and 1982.

Nobel Prize in Economics goes to Angus Deaton

The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2015 was awarded to Angus Deaton of Princeton University, NJ, USA, "for his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare". By linking detailed individual choices and aggregate outcomes, his research has helped transform the fields of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and development economics.
The work for which Mr. Deaton is now being honoured revolves around three central questions: How do consumers distribute their spending among different goods?; How much of society\'s income is spent and how much is saved? and How do we best measure and analyze welfare and poverty?
After the Nobel Prize annoucement, Mr. Deaton answered some questions:

Nepal PM K.P. Oli forms Cabinet

Veteran Communist leader K.P. Sharma Oli was on Monday sworn in as Nepal’s 38th Prime Minister, a day after he was elected in Parliament with support from smaller parties, even as the country is grappling with political unrest over the new Constitution.
Mr. Oli, 63, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Baran Yadav at his official residence here. He also has formed a small Cabinet incorporating two Deputy Prime Ministers and five ministers as he chaired his first Cabinet meeting here.

Chemistry Nobel laureate dies a pauper

Nobel laureate Richard Heck died in Manila on Saturday under tragic cicumstances as he was reportedly turned away from a private hospital because of unpaid bills. Heck received the Nobel in 2010. He was 84 and had been suffering from several ailments.

Heck won the Nobel prize in chemistry along with Japanese Ei-ichi Negishi and Akira Suzuki for inventing new ways to bind carbon atoms that were used in research to fight cancer and produce thin computer screens.
