After Nayantara Sahgal, poet Ashok Vajpeyi returns Sahitya Akademi award

A day after writer Nayantara Sahgal returned her Sahitya Akademi award against what she described “unmaking of India, poet Ashok Vajpeyi also handed back the prestigious literary honour to the government, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not speaking up against the recent spree of violence.

After seeing Ms. Sahgal, the 88-year-old niece of Jawaharlal Nehru, Mr. Vajpeyi said he decided to give up the award and express his solidarity with her.

Earlier, Uday Prakash, another famous literary figure in Hindi language, had returned the award.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry for DNA repair studies

The Nobel Prize 2015 in Chemistry jointly went to Tomas Lindahl, Paul Modrich and Aziz Sancar.

The Nobel was awarded “for mechanistic studies of DNA repair”.

Mr. Lindahl is from the Francis Crick Institute. \"He demonstrated that DNA decays at a rate that ought to have made the development of life on Earth impossible. This insight led him to discover a molecular machinery, base excision repair, which constantly counteracts the collapse of our DNA,\" said the Nobel Institute in a statement. Mr. Lindahl is also the 29th Nobel Laureate born in Sweden.

Nod for 3 more AIIMS-like institutions

The Union Cabinet on 7th October approved setting up of three more AIIMS-like institutions at Nagpur in Maharashtra, at Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh and at Kalyani in West Bengal.

The latest decision takes the number of AIIMS-like institutions, announced under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) to 11, with only the Delhi AIIMS functioning at full capacity.

The Cabinet has stated that the project will involve a financial implication of Rs. 4,949 crore.

These institutions will address regional imbalances in tertiary health care services, said a PIB release.

However, public health experts maintain that without investing in primary healthcare, setting up tertiary care centres in every State is unlikely to fix India’s crumbling health infrastructure.

Cabinet clears Rs. 500 crore for National War Memorial

The project at Princess Park in New Delhi is expected to be completed in five years.

The Centre on 7th October cleared the National War Memorial and National War Museum to be constructed at the India Gate circle in the national capital.

The proposal, to build the country’s first national memorial for soldiers who laid down their lives in post Independence, has been pending since the 1960s.

Coffee Day launches Rs. 1,150 cr IPO

Will be the biggest IPO to hit the capital market in three years

Coffee Day Enterprises , which among other businesses, owns and operates Café Coffee Day (CCD) food and beverage outlets in India has announced plans to enter the capital market on October 14, 2015, to raise about Rs.1,150 crore through a public issue of its equity shares.

It will be the biggest IPO to hit the capital market in three years, said merchant bankers.

The company will offer equity shares of face value of Rs.10 each for cash including a share premium. None of the private equity investors are selling shares to exit or part exit the company.

The price band has been fixed from Rs.316 to Rs.328 per equity share. The minimum bid lot is 45 shares and in multiples of 45 shares therein. The issue will close on October 16, 2015.

Kalam\'s birthday on October 15 will be no-schoolbag day in Mumbai

Students in the city and surrounding areas can leave their school bags at home next Thursday, when schools across the state will observe Vaachan Prerna Diwas or Reading Day as per a government order.

The decision to celebrate October 15, the birth anniversary of former President of India A P J Abdul Kalam, as Vaachan Prerna Diwas in schools across the state was made by school education minister Vinod Tawde soon after Kalam\'s death on July 27. In a government resolution issued on 7th October, the state asked all students from Class III to VIII to read non-academic books in school, and instructed schools to host book exhibitions, implement gift-a-book programmes, introduce students to well-known authors from around the world, and hold discussions on books. The government has said that almost Rs 6 lakh is available for the programme.
