Gurdev Singh Badal, former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader passed away at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana on March 28, 2017, following prolonged illness. He was 85.
According to cardiologist Vishwmohan, Gurdev was a chronic cardiac patient and he was admitted to the hospital on 9 March with multiple problems. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
About Gurdev Singh Badal
• He was a senior member of Shiromani Akali Dal. He had also served as the party’s Vice President.
• He was a five-time Member of Punjab Legislative Assembly, representing the Panjgrain constituency in Jalandhar district.
• He was also known as a close aide of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
• He contested his first election in 1977 and went on to win the following 1980 and 1985 assembly elections as well.
• He boycotted the assembly elections in 1992 along with the SAD.
• He won again from the Panjgrain seat in 1997 and 2002.
• However, in 2007 he lost for the first time to Congress candidate Joginder Singh, who was a new face at that time.
• He faced political challenges post-delimitation in 2012 after Jaitu was declared as the new seat in place of Panjgrain.
• One of his sons, Suba Singh Badal contested from the new Jaitu seat in 2017 assembly elections but lost subsequently.
To pay last respect to the former Agriculture Minister, the Punjab government has declared a half-day holiday in all offices, educational institutions, corporations and boards throughout the state as well as in Chandigarh.
