$$\eqalign{ & x + \frac{1}{x} = 2{\text{ }} \cr & {\text{But }}x = 1 \cr & {\text{So, }}{x^2} + \frac{1}{{{x^2}}} = {1^2} + \frac{1}{{{1^2}}} = 2 \cr} $$
