Chandigarh is located at the foothills of Shiwaliks. It was designed by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of Chandi located at the foothills of Shiwaliks. In March 1948, the Government of Punjab, in consultation with the Government of India approved Chandigarh (the area of the foothills of the Shiwaliks) as the new capital.
