Accede vs Exceed

To accede is to agree to something or to assume an office; whereas, to exceed is to go beyond limits or be greater in quantity or degree.

Need For Speed

There are 11 words in English language containing more than one syllable terminate with the sound SEED. Of these eleven, one ends in -sede, three in -ceed, and the rest in -cede.

The only English Word that ends in S-E-D-E is SUPERSEDE.

SUPERSEDE is combination of two Latin roots -super means above and sed-, sit - if one thing SUPERSEDES another, it etymologically sits above it, and thus pushes it out and takes its place. The root sed- is found also in SEDENTARY , involved with sitting, as a SEDENTARY occupation, and SEDIMENT, matter that falls to and sits at the bottom and forms SEDIMENTARY rock.

The only three word end in CEED are succeed, proceed and exceed. Like speed, these three words end in -eed.

Although the C of proceed followed by two E's, but the noun and adjective forms have only one E after the C : Procedure, means A fixed, step-by-step sequence of activities or course of action (with definite start and end points) that must be followed in the same order to correctly perform a task, and Procedural.

Other seven words are Accede, Antecede, Concede, Intercede, Precede, Recede and Secede.

Accede to agree to something or to assume an office. What is the noun and adjective form of Accede?

Antecede means go before, as in time, order like precede or If something happens earlier than something else, the earlier happening antecedes the later happening. Eg. The bombing of Hiroshima anteceded that of Nagasaki by a short period, during World War II.

Secede means to withdraw formally from an alliance, federation, or association, as from a political union, a religious organization.

Recede refers to go or move back or further away from a previous position.

Concede means to admit that you have been defeated and stop trying to win.
