Advice vs Advise

Advice is a noun meaning suggestion or guidance about what could or should be done; whereas Advise is only a verb. It means to give advice.

Advice is a noun. But What is a noun?

Everything you see is a noun. Recall names of your friends, relatives, business associates - they all are noun.

Look at the map - every city, state, and country, every village, town, every river, bay and inlet, from Dehli to London, New York to Kolkata - all these are nouns.

Everything is a noun. Abstract qualities, idea, emotions, concept, and activities are noun : politics, war, food, clothing,fear, hate, love.

You are a noun, and I am a noun, though the words you and I are not generally noun, but pronouns. Word itself is a noun but not every word is a noun. Your favorite Bhabhi Ji is a noun, and Tillu k Bhaiya is a noun.

Is it sound a little mixed up? Don't worry. Nouns and verbs are the sort of things you soon develop an instinct for. If you keep in mind that verbs are words that show action, and nouns are the names of persons, places, things, idea, concepts, or activities.

Study this paragraph from The Hindu (the nouns are bold.)

The decision to pick Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Urjit Patel as the successor to outgoing Governor Raghuram Rajan is a clear affirmation of the Centre’s commitment to ensure policy continuity at the central bank. That the man chosen for the top job at the RBI is a person who helped formulate crucial changes in the monetary framework, including the decision to target a specified inflation level as the primary remit of the bank, reflects the administration’s focus on making price stability central to its economic agenda.

Now, you mind is gradually becoming attuned to seeing differences in function between nouns and verb. Note in the following sentences how advice, the noun, is used as the name of a concept such as Bhabhi Ji Ghar Pe hain, while advise, the verb, is used to show a kind of action.

The Verb Advise

Bhabhi Ji advised him to go home.

He also gave some helpful advise on fire prevention in the home.

What would you advise his wife to do?

The Noun Advice

Bhabhi Ji's advice is to go home.

He suggested crops to grow, and offered business advice.

The Corporate Documents and Bank advice were issued.
