Manipur Governor, Najma Heptulla appointed as Jamia Chancellor

Incumbent Governor of Manipur, Najma Heptulla, was appointed as the Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.

The 77-year-old Heptulla will be succeeding Lt Gen (Retd) MA Zaki, who completes his five-year term this month. She would also be serving a term of five years.

About Najma Heptulla

Born on 13 April 1940, she is the grand-niece of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

Her political career started with the Indian National Congress where she headed several divisions in the party’s grassroots organisations.

She also served as the General Secretary of Congress during 1986 with the additional responsibility of youth activities of the All India Congress Committee and the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004.

She is a five-time member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament. She has also served as the Deputy Chairman of the House for sixteen years.

She was also one of the13 vice-presidents of the BJP in 2010.

She was fielded as the Vice-Presidential candidate in 2007 by the BJP-led NDA but lost to Congress-led UPA II’s candidate Hamid Ansari by 233 votes.

She took oath as the Union Minister of Minority Affairs under the Narendra Modi government on 26 May 2014 and was replaced by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in July 2016.
