No sooner ......... than the police handcuffed him.

A. he came

B. did he came

C. did he come

D. had he come

Answer: Option C

Solution (By Examveda Team)

No sooner is an expression that is used in formal English and is usually followed by an inverted sentence structure.

When a sentence begins with No sooner, it is followed by an auxiliary verb (like "did" or "had") and then the subject.

The correct structure is: No sooner + did + subject + base form of verb + than + ...

So, the correct sentence is: No sooner did he come than the police handcuffed him.

Option A ("he came") is incorrect because it does not follow the inversion required after "No sooner".

Option B ("did he came") is incorrect because "did" is already the auxiliary verb, so the main verb should be in base form ("come", not "came").

Option D ("had he come") is grammatically possible in past perfect tense but not suitable here unless the context demands a prior past action.

Therefore, Option C is the grammatically correct and contextually appropriate choice.
