Operation Vijay was started on 17^th December, 1961. Operation Vijay of 1961 was the product of the Government's desperate attempt to end 450 years of Portuguese' colonial rule in Goa. When the Portuguese refused to give up control of the state in 1947, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, started trying different non-violent ways to resolve the issue.
