Pakistani pacer Mohammad Irfan was slapped with a one-year ban and a fine of $ 1000 after he admitted to his fault of failing to report a spot-fixing approach by bookmakers during the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Irfan confirming his suspension stated that he was aware that it was his fault that he failed to notify the board when the bookies approached him, especially when the Pakistan Cricket Board’s code of conduct makes it very clear that any such interaction should be reported immediately. The pacer further requested for the nation’s forgiveness and hoped that he will be pardoned.

•The decision to suspend Irfan’s contract for one year will be reviewed after six months, after which it may get restored.
•Irfan had been suspended earlier on 14 March after he appeared before the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit after the final match of the Pakistan Super League in Lahore.
• PCB’s senior officials were reported to be satisfied that Irfan had not engaged in any malpractice and that his suspension was just a result of him failing to report the approach made towards him.
• It is also reported that there is a possibility that Irfan has reached an agreement with the Anti-corruption unit, in which he has shown willingness to share details about the spot-fixing scandal in the PSL and also reveal the names of players and bookies involved in it.
•However, neither the board nor Irfan has commented to confirm these reports.
Explaining his reason for not reporting the approach earlier, Irfan said that he was mentally disturbed after the death of his mother, who passed away while he was in Australia. Irfan's father also passed away a few months back.
Key Notes
•The PCB has created a tribunal comprising three members to hear the case against batsmen Khalid Latif and Sharjeel Khan. Both Latif and Khan were charged with spot-fixing in the league as well as for trying to coax other players into it.
•All three, Irfan, Khalid and Sharjeel played for Islamabad United in the PSL.
•Irfan made his international debut in 2010 and his seven feet height made him the tallest player ever to play international cricket.
• He has so far played four Tests, 20 Twenty20 format matches and 60 one-day internationals, where he grabbed 83 wickets at an average of 30.71.
•In the Indian Premier League, he represented the Kolkata Knight Riders team.
