The first Forest Policy of Madhya Pradesh was constituted in 1952. Forests must constitute 33% of land area for maintenance of ecological balance. Despite this policy, forest cover in India has been below the required amount. Forests have been cut to clear land for agriculture, setting up industries, laying roads, railway tracks and so on.

Madhya Pradesh has been divided into 16 forest territorial circles. Madhya Pradesh has 9 National Parks and 25 sanctuaries. The forest circles comprise 63 forest divisions.

The State has reported extent of recorded forest area, RFA 94,689 sq km which is 30.72% of its geographical area.

Mandla Plant Fossils National Park is situated in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh in India. This national park has plants in fossil form that existed in India anywhere between 40 million and 150 million years ago spread over seven villages of Mandla District.

The Leopard is the commonly sighted carnivore in this park. Other carnivores include wolf, jackal, hyena, and wild dog. The Madhav National Park has a very high concentration of spotted deer, chinkara, nilgai and also wild boar.

Kanha National Park is famous for Tiger. Kanha National Park was created on 1^st June 1955 and in 1973 was made the Kanha Tiger Reserve. Today it stretches over an area of 940 km² in the two districts Mandla and Balaghat.

Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. The Chambal River passes through the sanctuary dividing it into two parts. The western part is in Nimach district and eastern part is in Mandsaur district.

The White Tiger is also called the white Bengal tiger. Another name of 'White Tiger' area is Bandhavgarh. The white tigers are found only among the Indian tigers and can only be seen only in captivity now. The last white tiger reported in the wild was captured in the forests of Rewa in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Dinosaur National Park is located in Dhar. The National Dinosaur Fossil Park will be spread over 89.740 hectare forest area near Bagh Caves in Dhar forest division and is situated about 80 kilometers away from the district headquarters Dhar in Kukshi tehsil on Bagh-Jobat Road.
