Sting in worker honey bees is a modified part of Ovipositor.
The ovipositor is a tube-like organ used by some animals, especially insects, for the laying of eggs. In insects, an ovipositor consists of a maximum of three pairs of appendages.
The stingers of the Aculeata (wasps, hornets, bees, and ants) are ovipositors, highly modified and with associated venom glands. The female bees (worker bees and queens) are the only ones that can sting, and their stinger is a modified ovipositor.
