Academy of Fine Arts was formally established in 1933 by Lady Ranu Mukherjee. It was initially located in a room in the Indian Museum. Later it was shifted to a much larger space in the Cathedral Road by the patronage of Chief Minister Dr. BC Roy and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
