The construction of Basilica of Bom Jesus was completed in 1605. The basilica was commissioned by the religious order of the Jesuits; its construction began in 1594 and the church was consecrated in 1605. The basilica was built specifically to house the relics of St. Francis Xavier, which were shifted to the basilica in 1624.
