Golden Temple is located in the central part of old Amritsar. It is popularly known as the Harmandir Sahib. It is also known as Shri Darbar Sahib. The Harmandir Sahib is situated on a rectangular platform surrounded by the water of Amrit Sarovar. The city of Amritsar got its name from this lake, meaning Amrit Ka Sarovar (pool of nectar).
