In English, a candidate always TAKES an exam. It is the paper setter who ‘gives’ the exam.
North Indians, in particular, make the mistake of saying ‘give the exam’: I am giving my exam this August. This wrong construction is due to MTI - In Hindi and Indo-Aryan languages, we say “Pareeksha dena”, which gets mistakenly translated as “give the exam”. In Dravidian languages, the construction is usually “pareeksheyannu takho/tego (Kan.); “Pareeekshe vaanyko”(Tam.) which translates into “take the exam”. (The /t/ in the Dravidian languages quoted is dental - like in ‘taal’, ‘tum’, etc.)
Thus, in my experience, the Dravidian speaker correctly uses the form “Take the exam” whereas the Indo-Aryan speaker says “Give the exam”, which sounds incorrect in English.
