The Supreme Court ordered the Centre to set up panel to fix salary of nurses in private hospitals

The Supreme Court ordered the Centre to set up within four weeks a committee to investigate the living conditions and salary structure of nurses employed in private hospitals and nursing homes.

A three-judge Bench led by Justice Anil R. Dave directed the government to fix the salary structure of the nurses, who are mostly being paid a pittance by private hospitals for their professional services, in every State based on the guidelines of the expert panel.

The court ordered that the guidelines should be formulated within six months.

Background

The petition was filed by the Trained Nurses Association of India representing over three lakh nurses working in private establishments through the country.

The association, represented by Supreme Court advocate Romy Chacko, contended that the working conditions of nurses were in clear violation of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
