The West Bengal Panchayat Act, 1957 for the first time introduced

The West Bengal Panchayat Act, 1957 for the first time introduced the principle of adult franchise in the rural self-governing bodies. Another distinct feature of this Act was Gram Sabha which was the only structure where direct democracy was possible in the vast democratic country.
