Tier vs Tear

Tear refers to the fluid that flows from the eye; whereas; Tier is one of a series of rows/levels placed one above the others.

Tear

Tear means

1. To rend in pieces or pull apart.

"Did you tear your shirt? You'll have to change."

"Don't tear up the paper. I haven't read it yet."

2. A rent or hole in something.

"There's a tear in your shirt."

3. A drop of salty liquid, looks like water, which comes out of one’s eyes when one is crying or laughing too much, or when one’s eyes smart from smoke or fumes.

"She said she wasn't upset, but there was a tear in her eye."

"He never sheds a tear, even when he's hurt."

Tier

Tier means a set or series of ranks or levels, as of seats in a theater. This word could also be used to describe a layer, or level, of a larger object, such as a wedding cake, the food pyramid, etc.

"Our seats are on the third tier."

"You will be able to see better from the first or second tier."

"In an organization, persons at higher tiers usually have more responsibility and more pay than those at lower tiers."

Now that you know that, you can say-

"He couldn't reach the top tier of cartons, but he made a tear in the cardboard as a mark, instead of shedding a tear over it."
