Two pipes can fill an empty tank separately in 24 minutes and 40 minutes respectively and a third pipe can empty 30 gallons of water per minute. If all the three pipes are open, empty tank becomes full in one hour. The capacity of the tank (in gallons) is?

A. 500

B. 550

C. 600

D. 700

Solution (By Examveda Team)

Work Efficiency of Pipe One = 100/24 = 4.16% per minute

Work Efficiency of Pipe two = 100/40 = 2.5% %per minute.

Work Efficiency of third pipe which is doing a negative work = 30 gallons per minute

All three pipes can fill empty tank in 60 minute.
Work efficiency together = 100/60 = 1.66% per minute

Work Efficincy of third pipe = (1.66 - (4.16 +2.5)) = - 5 (-ve sign denottes, it is doing negative work.)
So,
5 = 30 gallons
1% = 30/5
Thus, 100% = (30*100)/5
So, Capicity of the tank = 600 gallons.

    Efficiency of inlet pipe A and B
    24A= 40B
    A:B= 5:3
    TOTAL WORK UNIT IS= 24*5=120
    LET EFFICIENCY OF OUT LET PIPE C IS = x
    Atq
    (5+3-x)60= 120
    480-60x= 120
    60x= 360
    X= 6
    So outlet Pipe c 's empty time =120/6= 20 minutes
    So total capacity of the tank is= 20*30=600 litter

    Suppose x Gallon( xg ) of water can be hold by tank
    then
    Suppose first pipe can fill tank in 1 minute = x/24
    Similarly, Second pipe in 1 minute= x/40
    We are given that third pipe can empty in 30g/min
    Also, All three pipe together can fill in 1hr i.e. 60min
    and in 1min all pipe fills x/60 gallon of water
    According to problem

    x/24 + x/40 + 30=x/60

    x/24 +x/40 - x/60= 30

    12x=30*240

    we get x=600 i.e. 600gallon

    My Solution is 1/24+1/40-1/x= 1/60; from this 1/x= 1/20; that means whole tank can empty in 20 Minutes. 1 minute--------> 30 Gallons; 20--------> ? gallons...
    20 minutes is 20*30= 600 Gallons.. simple way.............like it if u understands it...

    I think no need to do like examveda

    1/24 + 1/40 - 1/x = 1/60 ( x = minutes need to empty)
    1/x = 1/20
    it means 20 minutes need to empty the tank
    So total capacity of tank (20*30) = 600 gallons
