Equines (mules, donkeys, ponies, horses) are one of the important constituents of livestock. Jammu and Kashmir has about 12 lakh equine population which is second highest in the country. Jammu has a high population of ponies and mules that are used to a large extent in pilgrim tours. e.g. ponies are engaged at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. In Kashmir, ponies are used to transport men and materials to far off places. Religious tourism in Kashmir valley depends to a large extent on equines such as in Amarnath Cave where the major means of transportation is ponies.
