Whet vs Wet

Wet means moist; whereas, Whet means to sharpen.

Wet is

1. an adjective meaning covered or soaked in liquid.

"Having slept under a wet blanket, caused him fever."

"Walking bare feet on the wet grass gives immense relief."

"Take off your wet clothes. It’s not good for your health."

"Wipe the kitchen slab with a wet cloth."

2. a verb meaning to make wet.

"Sudden rain wet her clothes while she was on her way to the office."

"The kid wet his clothes while watering the plants."

The idiom "wet [one's] whistle" means to take a drink, to quench your thirst. Whistle here is a metonym for mouth, so the phrase literally means wet [one’s] mouth.

"I'm going to drink a beer to wet my whistle."

"You must be thirsty after all that work - would you care to wet your whistle?"

"They meet ostensibly to discuss politics, but also to wet their whistles with brandy and soda."

Whet

Whet is a verb meaning to sharpen or to stimulate or make more acute. Blades are whetted [sharpened] by whetstones. In modern usage it’s confined almost exclusively to the phrase whet [one’s] appetite.

'Whet your appetite' is used to refer to the act where appetites are whetted [sharpened] by tasty morsels or glimpses of interesting or desirable things.

To whet someone's appetite means to cause someone to be interested in something and to be eager to have, know, learn, etc., more about it.

"Seeingthat film really whetted my sister's appetite for horror films. She now sees as many as possible."

"My appetite for theater was whetted when I was very young."

"I did a short course last year, and it's whetted my appetite for study."
