Which year Election Commission has started with 'None of the above option' during voting?
A. 2004
B. 2009
C. State Elections of 2012
D. Yet to start
Answer: Option C
Solution (By Examveda Team)
'None of the Above' (NOTA) option was introduced in India to allow voters to reject all candidates in an election. The Election Commission of India implemented the NOTA option for the first time in the State Assembly Elections held in 2012 after a Supreme Court directive.
The provision was legally enforced following the Supreme Court judgment on 27th September 2013, which mandated that voters should have the right to reject all candidates.
However, the actual rollout started with the State Elections in 2012 using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
NOTA does not have any electoral value in terms of affecting the result, but it serves as an expression of dissent by the voter.
