Raja Gulab Singh, under the suzerainty of Ranjit Singh sent his General Zorawar Singh to invade Ladakh in 1834. King Tshespal Namgyal was dethroned and exiled. Maharaja Gulab Singh, after crushing a rebellion in Ladakh, ceded the region into Dogra empire.
