It operates in the regions of Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Guardafui Channel and the Gulf of Aden. Its major focus is protection of ships carrying relief and supplies for the World Food Program. World Food Program is a UN initiative that is the world’s largest humanitarian program addressing food security.
India’s SAGAR policy is to establish the image of net security provider
SAGAR was launched by India to improve its image as a net security provider. The acronym is for Security and Growth for All in the Region. It was launched in 2015 during prime ministerial visit to Mauritius. It is to provide maritime security in IOR. It’s in accordance with IORA/ Indian Ocean Rim Association set up in 1997 and works towards ‘open regionalism’.
