Irrigation is the main source of water in the semi-arid areas, hence it is not irrigated at scheduled stages it may lead to great loss. The critical stages for irrigation of sugarcane are the formative or vegetative stages. The formative stage is 60 - 130 days after planting and a heavy quantity of water is required at this stage in the northern part of India.
