Urea hydrolysis is a chemical reaction that occurs in soils, to transform the urea in urine into ammonia and bicarbonate, resulting in ammonia volatilization and mineral scaling. The pH is shifted from 6.8 to 9 and is detected by the change of colour of phenol red from light orange to magenta.
