Fertilizers containing chlorine ions are not suitable for Potato, as it is a chlorine-sensitive crop. For such crops only fertilizers containing potassium in the form of sulphate should be used.
Potato is sensitive to chloride ions because it hinders the transportation of carbohydrates of photosynthesis from the leaves into the tuber, which results in an excess of starch in the leaves whereas a limited percentage of starch is stored in tubers and we all know potato tuber is a carbohydrate-rich food.
