It is already said that he started from east. Now instead of Hemant imagine yourself going from east then you met a crossroad where left which will be your south there is a theatre and straight is west there is a hospital so your university is at north.
His house is in the east, thus he started walking towards west
I also got my answer as south direction . However the question didn't specify whether he started going east or west.hence data is inadequate
