Red soil is mostly found in southeast Maharashtra. Red soil is red because of the presence of ferric oxide, it is porous and has a friable structure with a sandy to clay and loamy texture.

Black soil is mostly found in the Kerala region. It is clayey in texture and is highly fertile. This soil is rich in calcium carbonate, magnesium, potash and lime but poor in nitrogen and phosphorus.

Laterite soil is found in Tamil Nadu state in areas with high temperatures and heavy rainfall. This soil is formed by the process of intense leaching.

Decan soil is the black or alluvial soil found in central India and regions of Uttar Pradesh, deposited by the surface water and is extremely fertile.

Sandy soil is found in the desert region of Rajasthan. Sandy soil is light, warm, dry and tends to be acidic and low in nutrients.
