The central origin is probably Peninsular India, where the closest wild relatives (Cajanus cajanifolia) occur in tropical deciduous woodlands. From India, it travelled to East Africa and West Africa. Now pigeon pea is grown in over 50 tropical countries of the world, especially in more arid regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas.
