The chemical used to differentiate between light and heavy minerals is Bromoform.
It is a brominated organic solvent, colourless liquid at room temperature, with a high refractive index, very high density, and sweet odor similar to that of chloroform. Bromoform is used a reagent, solvent, sedative and a flame reatardant.
