Bhagirath Manjhi was the pioneer of the Kharwar movement, which began in 1884 in response to injustices such as excessive rack rents and the eviction of village headmen. In 1800, Bhukhan Singh led the Chero uprising in Palamu, Jharkhand, on Rajah Shiv Prasad Singh's domain.
