Phani Mukut Rai, the son of Pundrika Naga, a descendant of Naga king Takshaka, was the founder of the Nagvanshi dynasty, according to Nagvanshi annals. He was Madra Munda's adopted son. In Sutiambe, some 20 kilometres north of Ranchi, he was exalted to the kingdom by Madra Munda and other lords.
