Biennials are such plants that require two years to complete their life cycle. First-year growth results in a small rosette of leaves near the soil surface. During the second year of growth stem elongation, flowering, and seed formation occur followed by the entire plant's death.
In carrots, swollen roots are produced in the year of sowing and are harvested, stored and consumed. To produce seeds, the roots must be left and after vernalizing, the plants that flower in the following year. The plant produces a tall stem with many branches bearing seeds.
