An illness which is known as "favism" is caused in people due to an allergy to pollen and green pod of Broad bean.
The term 'favism' is used to indicate a severe reaction occurring on ingestion of foodstuffs consisting of or containing the beans of the leguminous plant Vicia faba (fava bean, broad bean). Within 6 - 24 h of the bean meal, the reaction manifests itself with prostration, pallor, jaundice and dark urine.
Some people suffer from favism, a hemolytic response to the consumption of broad beans, a condition linked to a metabolism disorder. Sufferers of favism must avoid broad beans, as they contain the alkaloid glycoside vicine which may initiate a hemolytic crisis.
