Far more than today, women then lived in a man’s world. In peace time they existed within the constraints of religious dogma and ritual, accentuated among the Hindus by the rigid caste system. In war, if they were not slaughtered ― and sometimes they were ― they became the bounty of the victor or were taken into slavery.
